![]() "Pop stars are our new gods" is an interesting concept, but not really new or groundbreaking, and it wasn't until the end that I really thought we got into the implications of all of this (and even that was mainly just teaser for the next volume) - what does it mean to have instant celebrity but only two years to live? What would compel one to live those two years as a celebrity? In what way would that celebrity be satisfying or unsatisfying? The story didn't dig into any of this, and aside from Lucifer the characters felt thin to me, more metaphorical straw men than characters to care about in their own right.ĭoug Glassman: That The Wicked + The Divine starts out feeling shallow is not really a surprise. This is a perfectly workable premise - gods reincarnated every ninety years as essentially pop celebrities, but given only two years to live - but I never felt the story delved below the surface level. 1: The Faust Act will be an interesting one for us to review together, especially if you liked it, because by and large I did not. ![]() ![]() ![]() Ĭollected Editions: The Wicked + The Divine Vol. It's a Collected Editions co-review, as I join contributor Doug Glassman ( '80s Marvel Rocks!) to discuss The Wicked + The Divine Vol. ![]()

The fear of black consciousness6/24/2023 ![]() But for many if not most Blacks, to live an ordinary life in a white-dominated society is an extraordinary achievement. He exposes the bad faith at the heart of many discussions about race and racism not only in America but across the globe, including those who think of themselves as "color blind." As Gordon reveals, these lies offer many white people an inherited sense of being extraordinary, a license to do as they please. Skillfully navigating a difficult and traumatic terrain, Gordon cuts through the mist of white narcissism and the versions of consciousness it perpetuates. Gordon, one of the leading scholars of Black existentialism and anti-Blackness, takes the reader on a journey through the historical development of racialized Blackness, the problems this kind of consciousness produces, and the many creative responses from Black and non-Black communities in contemporary struggles for dignity and freedom. In this original and penetrating work, Lewis R. ![]() ![]() Gordon's Fear of Black Consciousness is a groundbreaking account of Black consciousness by a leading philosopher ![]()

Peace Child by Don Richardson6/23/2023 ![]() ![]() As Carol and I ministered to the Sawi by means of the "peace child" and other redemptive analogies, we watched in suspense to see if the Spirit of God would actually use this means of communication for the regeneration of these cannibalistic, head-hunting people. ![]() The key God gave us to the heart of the Sawi people was the principle of redemptive analogy - the application to local custom of spiritual truth. Yet we had been sent there by God to win them, to overcome within a few short years this idealization of treachery which had been part of their way of life over centuries, possibly millenniums, of time. In recognizing that the idealization of treachery was a part of the Sawi view of life, we understood why we felt a certain culture shock in living among them. In 1962, Carol and I went to live among the Sawi. Summary: The Sawi people of the former Netherlands New Guinea are one of an estimated four hundred tribes in the western half of New Guinea now called West Irian or Irian Jaya. ![]()

![]() That, however, is where the similarities end. RELATED: ‘Catherine Called Birdy’: Release Date, Cast, Trailer, and Everything You Need to Know We saw this in the prologue to Drew Barrymore's Ever After, and we see it again here. ![]() She's the sort of troublemaking tween girl who rolls in the mud and plays with the barn animals in a way that doesn't befit a "lady" but is very reminiscent of what a 90s idea of an independent, unconventional girl looks like. Fortunately, Catherine Called Birdy, a film with a loosely similar premise does a much better job at conveying the frustrations of a young woman considered little more than property in the eyes of her father or the law.Ĭatherine Called Birdy, based on the children's novel by Karen Cushman, follows a year in the life of the titular Catherine ( Bella Ramsey).
